Helmet Policy
Helmet Requirements (as per Skate Canada guidelines)
Skaters participating in CanSkate up to and including Stage 5 are required to wear a CSA approved helmet while on the ice. This requirement also applies to all participants in the PowerSkate program at all times.
CSA approval is not limited to traditional hockey helmets. Other helmet styles that meet CSA standards, such as the Wuevo helmet, are acceptable. For this reason, policy language has been updated to reflect CSA approval rather than specifying helmet type. Wuevo Helmet Web Page
All Skate Canada clubs and skating schools offering CanSkate programs are responsible for ensuring this policy is followed. Bicycle helmets, ski helmets, or other non CSA approved helmets are not permitted.
This helmet requirement also extends to other Skate Canada programs when a skater demonstrates limited balance or control, including difficulty skating forward or backward, stopping safely, or maneuvering around obstacles.
Clubs must enforce helmet use consistently during all on ice activities, including regular sessions, competitions, ice shows, and special events throughout the season.
These guidelines represent the minimum safety standard set by Skate Canada. Sections may choose to implement stricter requirements, which clubs within that section must follow.
Helmet Use at Tests and Competitions
Skaters who are beyond CanSkate Stage 5 may choose to wear a CSA approved helmet during tests or competitions. Wearing a helmet at this level will not result in any penalties or deductions.
