CANCELLED SESSION

We regret to inform you that the City of Toronto has closed East York Memorial Arena due to the power outage. As a result, all scheduled classes are cancelled tonight.

CANKSATE - SPRING 2025 WELCOME!

We’re thrilled to welcome you to the East York Skating Club’s Spring 2025 programs! Please see below for important information to get ready for the season:

Session Dates:

  • Tuesday Sessions: April 29 – June 3

  • Thursday Sessions: May 1 – June 5

Required Equipment: All skaters must have:

  • Sharpened Skates (hockey or figure skates)
Please avoid plastic skates, as they hinder proper ankle and knee flexion.

  • CSA-Approved Hockey Helmet
Mandatory until completion of Level 5. A cage is recommended for Pre-Can skaters.

  • Mitts/Gloves (for protection and warmth)

  • Coat

  • Waterproof Pants (recommended for Pre-Can/beginner skaters practicing falls and standing)

▶️ For more information, check out the Skate Canada Equipment Video.

Arena Entry & Check-In:

  • Arrive early to allow time for parking and getting ready.

  • Allow at least 15 minutes before ice time to put on skates and helmets.

  • For the first session, a volunteer will be at the lobby desk handing out nametags.

    • Sticker nametags go on helmets.

    • colored dot will indicate your skater’s group.

  • Proceed downstairs to select a changeroom.

✅ New: Attached is a sign to show which arena doors skaters should use to enter and exit the ice. Please follow these signs to help keep traffic flowing smoothly!

Session Structure:

  • First Day:
Skaters will be grouped based on current levels. New skaters will start at Level 1.
If your skater is transferring from another club, please email us their achievements so we can update their profile!

  • Group Changes:
Over the first few weeks, skaters may move groups based on coach assessments to find the best fit. Group colour stickers will be updated as needed.

  • Program Flow:

    • Pre-Can: 30-minute sessions with a dedicated coach.

    • CanSkate, Tween, Teen, Fundamentals:

      • Group warm-up

      • Skill-based group classes

      • Group activity and cool-down

      • Starting Week 2, skaters will rotate through 3 different stations focusing on:

        • Balance (forward skating, edges, crossovers)

        • Agility (turns, spins, jumps)

        • Control (stopping, skating backward, speed)

Station rotation ensures all skaters benefit from diverse coaching styles and consistent skill progressions!

Badge System and Progress Reports:

  • Skaters will earn ribbons and badges as they master skills.

  • To achieve a badge, skaters must earn ribbons in all three categories: Balance, Agility, and Control.
    Example: Agility 1 + Balance 1 + Control 1 = Stage 1 Badge

  • Skaters may progress at different rates in each area, and that’s perfectly normal!

    • CanSkate: Working on Badges 1–2

    • Fundamentals: Working on Badges 3–6

📋 Progress Reports:
At the end of the season, skaters’ report cards will be available for viewing online through your Uplifter account.

🏅 Ribbons and badges will be handed out during the final session to celebrate your skater’s achievements!

Important Reminders:

  • A guardian must remain at the rink during all sessions in case of emergencies.
